How to Remove Heat Press Marks on Polyester (Easy & Safe Methods)

Polyester is one of the most popular fabrics for heat press printing because it works perfectly with sublimation and DTF. However, it is also very sensitive to heat. If the temperature, pressure, or pressing time is too high, you may notice heat press marks, shine, or scorch marks on the fabric.
The good news? In many cases, heat press marks on polyester can be reduced or completely removed. Here’s how to do it safely and professionally.

What Causes Heat Press Marks on Polyester?
Heat press marks usually appear because of:
• Too high temperature
• Excessive pressure
• Pressing for too long
• Direct contact with the hot platen
• Pressing over seams or thick areas
Understanding the cause helps prevent the problem in future prints.

Safe Methods to Remove Heat Press Marks
1. Use Steam (Highly Effective)
Steam helps relax polyester fibers and remove shine.
How to do it:
• Hold a garment steamer or iron (steam mode) a few centimeters above the fabric
• Do not touch the fabric directly
• Lightly steam the affected area
• Gently brush or rub with a clean cloth
✔ Best for mild to medium heat marks
2. Wash the Shirt Properly
Sometimes, heat marks fade after washing.
Steps:
• Wash in cold water
• Use mild detergent
• Turn the shirt inside out
• Air dry (avoid dryers)
✔ Works best for light shine or pressure marks

3. Use a Damp Cloth & Low Heat
This method works well if marks are fresh.
Steps:
• Place a slightly damp cloth over the marked area
• Set your iron to low heat
• Press lightly for a few seconds
• Allow to cool
⚠️ Do NOT apply high heat — polyester melts easily.

4. Brush the Fibers
For shiny spots, lifting the fibers helps.
How:
• Use a soft fabric brush or clean toothbrush
• Gently brush in one direction
• Combine with light steam for better results
✔ Effective for surface shine
5. Use a Teflon or Parchment Sheet (Prevention Tip)
While this won’t fix marks already present, it prevents them in the future.
• Always cover polyester garments with Teflon or parchment paper
• Reduce pressure
• Lower pressing temperature

When Heat Press Marks Cannot Be Removed
Unfortunately, some damage is permanent:
• Melted fibers
• Burnt fabric
• Severe discoloration
In these cases, the best solution is reprinting on a new garment.

How to Prevent Heat Press Marks on Polyester
✔ Use lower temperatures (140–160°C)
✔ Apply light to medium pressure
✔ Use shorter pressing times
✔ Avoid direct platen contact
✔ Do not press over seams
✔ Test before mass production
