What Are DTF Printers? Types and Differences

The world of textile and custom printing has changed dramatically with the rise of DTF printers. If you’ve ever admired a vibrant design on a t-shirt, tote bag, or hoodie, chances are it may have been made with DTF technology.
What is a DTF Printer?
DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing is a modern printing method that transfers designs onto fabric using a special film. Unlike traditional heat transfer or screen printing, DTF doesn’t require cutting or weeding vinyl. Instead, the design is printed directly onto a PET film using special inks and then transferred onto the garment with a heat press.
How it works:
1. The design is printed onto PET film with DTF ink.
2. Hot-melt powder is applied to the printed design.
3. The film is heated to cure the adhesive powder.
4. The film is placed on the fabric and heat-pressed.
5. Once cooled, the film is peeled off, leaving a vibrant, durable print.
Types of DTF Printers
DTF printers come in different types depending on size, speed, and functionality. Here are the main categories:
1. Desktop DTF Printers (A3 or smaller)
• Best for: Small businesses, startups, hobbyists.
• Features: Compact, affordable, prints on A4 or A3 PET films.
• Example: Converted Epson inkjet printers.
• Pros: Budget-friendly, easy to use, great for small orders.
• Cons: Slower printing speed, limited to small-scale production.
2. Mid-Range DTF Printers (24–60 cm print width)
• Best for: Growing print shops and medium production.
• Features: Roll-fed, automated powder shaker and dryer.
• Pros: Faster, more consistent, handles larger prints.
• Cons: More expensive than desktop versions, requires space.
3. Industrial/Large-Format DTF Printers (up to 120 cm or more)
• Best for: Large businesses, bulk production.
• Features: High-speed printing, multiple print heads, continuous film roll system, integrated curing.
• Pros: Very high production capacity, excellent print quality.
• Cons: Expensive, requires trained operators, larger space, and higher maintenance.
Key Differences Between DTF Printer Types
Feature Desktop DTF (A3)
Mid-Range DTF (24–60 cm) Industrial DTF (1m+)
Size
Compact (A4/A3 film) Medium (24–60 cm film rolls) Large (100–120 cm+ film rolls)

Why Choose DTF Printing?
DTF printing is growing rapidly because:
• It works on cotton, polyester, blends, and more.
• No need for pre-treatment (unlike DTG).
• Produces vibrant, durable, and stretch-resistant prints.
• Suitable for both small custom jobs and bulk orders.
